We all know that with time our physical appearance changes…
At one point we wish if we could turn back the hands of time. The face in the mirror is no longer the same as it used to be. Lines and wrinkles have appeared and our skin is different. At this point many women begin to ask themselves what their options are. Is there any way to slow down the process of aging?
By now most of us have heard about the notion “Botox” and many wonder whether or not it can help us look younger. There are many myths circling around the web about it. In this blog post we would like to help bring some clarity. Botulinum toxin (BTX) also known as “Botox” is a highly purified protein that is extracted from bacteria, in a similar way that penicillin comes from a mould. It is not a miracle product that will make you look twenty years younger nor will it completely change your appearance. It is a medicine. It softens the facial expressions and helps to prevent wrinkles.
How does Botulinum Toxin, also known as ©Botox, actually work?
Botox relaxes the facial muscles that cause expression lines and leaves the overlying skin smooth and unwrinkled. According to a Canadian study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery by dermatologist Dr. James Bonaparte of the University of Ottawa and Dr. David Ellis of the University of Toronto, the drug could increase the skin elasticity by 30 percent when the effects were at their most powerful. It stays active for three to four months in the body. It is a quick fix with immediate gratifications and when used in small amounts can be beneficial.
As we grow older the skins elasticity begins to decrease. The process begins in our twenties and by thirty and forty we begin to see the effect. As the skin loses its elasticity and volume it also loses its capacity to withstand the pulling forces of the muscles below. With time lines and wrinkles become more noticeable. As ©Botox may increase both the skins elasticity as well as relaxing the muscles responsible for the creation of lines and wrinkles, it may be used as a help for the prevention of wrinkles in the first place. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons over 6.6 million Americans underwent treatment with Botulinum Toxin or a similar drug last year.
How to ensure even, smooth & natural results?
Dr. Made Ita gives us some recommendations:
Is less always more when it comes to using Botulinum Toxin also known as “Botox”?
It depends on the client’s needs. It’s about the optimal dose for that person not to look frozen but rather to look natural and fresh. The right dose is the one that is just enough.
Do you have any advice on how to make ©Botox” look natural?
Botox is used for treating contraction lines that comes from repeated muscle action, for example when we frown, smile or raise the eyebrows. These actions along with the degeneration of the skin leads to the formation of lines and wrinkles. So we use this drug injection to relax the facial muscle responsible. I ask my clients to demonstrate how strong their contraction muscles are by getting them to frown, smile and raise their eyebrows. Based on this demonstration of the muscle contraction I can decide the specific needs for each client. How many units they will need to look natural and fresh is always individual.
At what age would you recommend someone start using ©Botox?
It’s safe to use this drug after you’ve become 20 or 25 years old. The FDA has approved the use of Botox on the frown line. For young men and women with especially deep frown lines could be treated with such drugs. It depends on the client’s needs.
Would you recommend this treatment for people who have poor skin elasticity or for people who age prematurely?
Yes, they can definitely consider it, but for best results I would recommend it with a combination of other treatments as well such as fillers, Radio Frequency or Laser.
Do you think ©Botox helps to slow down aging and why?
Yes. The drug works to relax the muscle and repeated contraction, that forms the wrinkles and folds in our skin, does not happen. When we were young our skin would spring back to its initial position after the facial expression, but as we get older, dynamic wrinkles remain on the skin and form static wrinkles; meaning the wrinkles and folds become present even when we relax the muscles. For example: In the case of Glabelar lines (frown lines). ©Botox can be used to relax the muscle in that area and once the muscles are relaxed it prevents the undesirable facial expression. That way the glabellar lines are gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.
